Women’s Museum Merano

HerStory Comes Alive

The Women’s Museum in Merano is a unique institution with a fascinating history, where women’s lives and stories are brought to life. It was founded in 1988 by Evelyn Ortner (1944–1997), an Austrian-born collector with a passion for preserving women’s cultural heritage.

Today, the Women’s Museum Association, established in 1993, manages the museum, which has since doubled its exhibition space and collection. Housed in a former Poor Clares convent, it attracts visitors from both near and far, and enjoys wide recognition on regional and international levels.

Through clothing, fashion trends, accessories, and everyday objects, the museum traces the changing roles and experiences of women from past centuries to the present. A varied cultural program explores and discusses these topics in greater depth.
