General Assembly of IAWM
See you in Merano, Italy
Welcome.
Sissi Prader
Former director (until 2023) and currently serving as Interim Director of the
Women's Museum Merano /
Merano, Italy
“It is a particular pleasure for me to welcome you to the 7th General Assembly of the International Association of Women's Museums (IAWM) here in Merano, Italy.
In 2008, we had the honor of hosting the first congress, with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi as our godmother. That marked the beginning of our international network.
At the Women's Museum in Merano, we had already gained extensive experience in building networks. We knew from the start that while networking often requires additional effort, it ultimately makes the work within our own museum more effective and fulfilling. Our activist approach at the Women’s Museum inspired us to establish a strong international platform—one that extends beyond the museum world into broader spheres such as women's rights, job creation for women in our communities, and participation in international, national, and local gender discourses.
It is important to me that women's museums continue to embrace their innovative spirit. Many have already stepped beyond the traditional boundaries of what a museum is, becoming vibrant centers of culture, art, and lifelong learning—often confronting taboo subjects and sparking socio-political dialogue before others dared to do so. But we must keep moving forward, taking bold new steps to ensure our continued relevance and impact.”
Gaby Franger
Chair of IAWM and director or the Museum Women’s Culture Regional–International (Museum Frauenkultur Regional-International) /
Fürth, Germany
“In 2008, women’s museums from around the world gathered in Merano, Italy. Now, 17 years later, and 13 years after the formal founding of the International Association of Women’s Museums (IAWM) in Alice Springs, Australia—we return to Merano: founding members and representatives from newly established museums across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe.
More than 125 years since the beginnings of the women’s rights movement, the women’s achievements, their creativity, courage, and resilience, still need to be fully integrated into the collective memory. Wherever our members are active, we are committed to ensuring that these stories are seen and valued. Through anti-discriminatory approaches and a focus on women’s cultures, histories, and artistic expressions—past and present—the image of society only becomes a complete picture.
Women’s and Gender Museums stand up for human rights and the dignity of all people. Our work is essential for education, empowerment, and building self-confidence across all genders. We provide tools to combat all forms of discrimination and ableism.
The topic of this year’s 7th General Assembly, featuring conferences and an exhibition, is: Feminist Strategies of Resistance in Women’s and Gender Museums. I look forward to enriching, inspiring discussions in which we support and encourage each other, especially our members who face repression and hardship.”
A *star for gender.
You will encounter an asterisk in several places on this website. In German, the asterisk* is used for gender neutral language. Placing the gender star (so called Gendersternchen) after the masculine stem and appending the feminine suffix “in” makes it possible to refer to all genders including non-binary people as well:
Lehrer = male teacher
Lehrer*in = includes male, female as well as non-binary people
Women`s voices from all over the world.
